The “U” in Us

By Deyanira Hernandez

Often times, people remember all of the things that divide them in society, but fail to remember the one common denominator that we have: WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS. The “U” in Us is a movement that promotes UNITY and positivity in all communities. The “U” in Us is co-founded by Deyanira “Deya” Hernandez and Marianne Matar. Our Coordinator for Change Officer lead is Monyque Zamora.  Our organization’s official slogan is “Change starts with US, the U in US” and our mission is to inspire, motivate, educate, and spread positivity in an impactful way. The organization’s vision is that “Our minds are like matches waiting to be sparked, and together we can build a fire bright enough to evoke positive change in our world.”

The organization also engages with and gives back to our communities through service and education. This movement is inspired by Tupac Amaru Shakur. Deya has always been inspired by the late artist. When she came across a Vibe magazine interview with him, one of his quotes stood out to her the most: “I’m not saying I’m gonna change the world, but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world.” From then on, she did more and more research and found her passion within this work.

#TheUinUs has now hosted two events and is currently planning more. It will eventually become a non-profit organization, but as of now, it is developing as a student organization at California State University San Marcos, where Deya is currently a student. Right now, we are focusing on targeting homelessness all over San Diego county and eventually Los Angeles county. We also want to attend different high schools and middle schools to host a program that shares these amazing ideas with students so that they start soul searching and dream chasing early.
